Winter Basement Waterproofing

Here at Best Waterproofing, we are often asked whether it is feasible, or at all possible, to waterproof a basement for the winter months.

The answer is, yes, and that you really should consider winter basement waterproofing to protect your home’s value, as well as its safety.

Waterproofing your basement has many benefits, as it can prevent and mitigate flooding and water damage in general. Both the interior and the exterior of your home are subject to water damage, and the basement is the part of the home that is in most need of waterproofing.

Structural damage to your home is a high risk factor in basement flooding, which is why you should consider reaching out to a contractor for waterproofing, no matter what time of year it is.

Waterproofing in the Winter

It is possible to waterproof your basement in the winter, so you can rest easy if you were under the impression that this kind of work can only be done in warmer months.

Unless there are temperature extremes and freezing on the workdays, the job should go by without a hitch. The waterproofing will also be every bit as effective as when done any other time of year.

An extra benefit is that the winter tends to be a slower time for contractors, so you are sure to get quicker service than usual.

If you are already seeing signs of water problems in the winter months, do not hesitate to reach out to a contractor. Even if they are busy and cannot help you immediately, they can still offer you advice suited to your unique situation’s needs, so that you can hold over until they get in to do the waterproofing.

How to Know Whether You Need Winter Waterproofing

If paint is peeling or you see mold on the walls, then that is one sign that you may need help. Paint chips fallen to the ground and flaking on the walls are other signs.

Cracks and a general disintegration of mortar or caulking can also tell you that waterproofing is needed. A basement that is colder than usual could be a sign that water damage is reaching the windows and the walls.

Smells can also clue you in, so if you notice any change in your basement’s smell, then that may clue you in that leakage is occurring.

More obvious signs are dampness and puddles or pools. Warping on any wood can be a sign of recent water damage.

Sense of touch can also come in handy, as you can feel dampness on the walls, floor, and ceiling that may not be readily visible. This can be especially helpful in finding a problem before it gets out of hand.
