A powerful storm front pushed through Kentucky over the weekend setting records, damaging property and causing over 80 people to need rescuing. Louisville and the Jefferson County areas were affected most by the storm.
Although there were no reported injuries, many of the recused had to be saved by boat. Officials reported that the water was waist-deep in some spots. First-floor apartments and vehicles were swallowed by the high waters, and at least 45 roads were closed.
A reported 5.91 inches fell on Saturday night alone, setting a new local record, the old record being 3.07 inches. The threat of flooding remained on Sunday, when another 2 inches fell.
If you were affected or knew someone who was affected by the flood it is very important that you take precautions when cleaning-up the floodwaters. Here is a list of things you can do to better ensure your safety as well as help your home get back to normal as quickly as possible.
- Electrocution is always a danger in a flooding basement. It is always the safest if you wait until the water recedes before going into the basement, however if you do decide to walk in the water, shut the electricity off at the main box before doing so.
- If you suspect leak or smell a gas odor leave immediately. Do not touch any electrical fixtures, telephones or switches as these could ignite the gas. Do not light a match anywhere near the house. Once you have left the house call your local fire department.
- Sewage water may be contaminated, take the necessary precautions; wear rubber glove and boots, do not smoke, eat or touch your face while in the flooded area. If you have an open wound avoid the area, if you receive an open wound while working in the flooded area, seek medical attention immediately.
- If you have any wet appliances or a furnace, have them inspected by a qualified service technician before using them, as this may cause a shock and pose a risk to your safety. If your furnace is cleared for use, replace the filter.
- Do not allow children or pets near the flooded area.
- Before and after the water recedes the flooded area will be slippery, remember to take precautions.
- Move all of your wet belongings off of the floor. Start with any valuables; electronics, sporting gear or equipment, furniture etc. Move your belongings out of the basement to a designated dry area.
- Begin to clean up the water. You can do so with a floor sponge; guiding the water to the sump basin or floor drain (a broom or mop can be just as effective). If you have a wet or dry vacuum use it to move the water to the sump basin.
- Now that you probably will have the water out of the basement, you can now begin to dry things. Open the basement windows if it is not still storming. If you have a fan or a humidifier, turn it on. This will begin to absorb the moisture. You may also turn on your heat or air as well.
- Constantly clean. If there is water or damp areas continue to work on getting the water up.
